Q:

Ice Maker/Water Line freezing up GC5SHGXLB00 Whirlpool Refrigerator

A:

Thanks for contacting manage my life about your refrigerator model GC5SHGXLB00; sorry to hear you are having a problem, I will be glad to assist you. If I understand your description correctly the fill tube for the ice maker is getting blocked with ice. Verify that the fill tube is clogged with ice and not frost, and that there is not frost build up in the freezer section elsewhere. If the fill tube has ice in it, I suspect the inlet water valve that supplies water to the ice make i9s weeping. That means that water is seeping through it all the time and the small amount of water freezes inside the tube and builds up eventually blocking it. You can test this by getting to the back of the refrigerator, remove the supply tube at the fill tube and observe if water seeps out (very slowly). Another way to test would be to turn the water supply off after cleaning and give it a few days then check to see if the fill tube is blocked. If it is then there is a frosting issue, look for air leaks. If it does not clog, then the most likely problem in the inlet valve. I hope this helps, if you need more help reply with added details and I will be happy to respond. If you need parts here is a link to Sears Parts Direct. Ron, Thanks so much for the great advice. I definitely think you are on to something. I have noticed when I come down in the morning that the tray under the ice/water dispensers on the door have been a little wet as if it has been slowly dripping as you described in you reply. So my next question is what part number is the valve? I have looked through all of the diagrams online and the valve is not listed or maybe I missed it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Matt

Q:

Could the solenoid valve be why, the dispenser doesn't work?

A:

The water valve could be why the dispenser quit working. It could also be due to a frozen water line in the door, the reservoir could be frozen or the actuator switch could be defective. To check the reservoir behind the crispers, take it loose and shake it, to see if the water is free inside of it. If the reservoir is ok, now take the water connection under the freezer door loose (some water will come out). Activate the dispenser lever and if water comes out under pressure, it indicates the water line in the door is frozen. If nothing comes out and the reservoir is clear, the water valve will probably be the problem. If you can hear it buzzing, it means that it is getting energized and will need to be replaced. If it's not making any noise, some voltage checks will need to be made. A technician may be needed to make these checks. If you need more assistance, you can resubmit your question with more details.
