It this particular scenario the transmission is not releasing the brake when it goes in the spin direction. This would indicate a transmission failure.

The spin bearing can also seize up and cause the belt to burn and break.

The transmission and bearing are expensive parts to replace. You might spend $350 to $450 dollars to repair. A brand new similar washer would start in the $350 dollar range. Replacement would be a better option.

Thanks for taking the time to submit a question. From the description you give I suspect the timer is the problem.

If the washer will agitate then the belt is okay.

If the washer will agitate the motor is most likely okay.

Does the motor seem to run in spin?

If the motor is running but there is no spin then the transmission might be the cause of the problem.
