Thank you for your question on the enclosed garden.

Since it will be only 20X20 foot garden I do not believe you will have to get that heavy of construction. As far has anchoring the open trusses you will need a pretty sturdy wall frame to hold them up if you get a storm.

I like the chicken wire idea. But it sounds like you want a pretty heavy type construction.

You could make a HOOP type system with a removable mesh cover top.

I used a hoop style with just black plastic mesh that is used to keep out deer and birds.

I have another one with plastic on it for my winter (greens) house here in central Texas that works very well.

I grow Swiss chard, spinach,Bok Choy, muslin mix lettuces and peppers and tomatoes in a 14X16 hoop house.

The magazine Mother Earth News has an article for a hoop house you may be interested in that is quite simple but is very effective if you want to have a greenhouse or just a protected garden.

Take a look at this to see if this will work for you.

There are many different designs. Some more involved in stucture than others.

Hoop house .

I am not saying you have to do this style. You do what ever will work for you. But I would suggest getting on line and see some inexpensive alternatives for building a tunnel house or a hoop house for protecting you garden.

Most of my problems are with the outside unprotected garden is deer.

Please let me know what you decide to do.

Sam A. Happy gardening.

Sam, Thanks for the advise. However I am located in Rapid City, SD. So I dont' know if the hoop will work primarily becuase of wind. I am also going to make it a raised garden primarily becuas3e my yard is in the black hills with a lot of sandstone and don't think it would be very good garden growing ground. So I do need something strong and sturdy that will withstand the winds, winter and summer heat. But also something that will keep out the deer and other wild life. Do you think the hoop style garden will still work? I really appreciate all the responses and advise!

Thank you for the update. I originally got the idea from my brother who lives in northern Minnesota on the old home farm. I think if you build it sturdy enough it should with stand the wind, especially if you but a plastic mesh or even chicken wire on it because wind will go through it. My (greens) house has handled 50 to 60 mph winds from a recent tornado in the area. It will move and flex but not come apart. If you can find the article in the Mother Earth news it had good plans. It was on the cover of the magazine on the 2011 October/November issue. Sam A.
