I believe you mean the compressor only runs for 5-10 seconds. I am presuming the switch that you are talking about getting hot is the one mounted close to the compressor, which is in fact the overload protection device. Should this not be the case it does not really matter the symptoms point to one of two things, a failed compressor or hydraulic lock in the refrigeration system both of which will stop the compressor running correctly and therefore draw an overload current, tripping the safety device. When it cools down the compressor will try to run again. The second possible fault is in the electrical system allowing excess current to be drawn thus tripping the overload switch. Unfortunately both of these require some degree of expertise to properly analyse and as you have asked the question I am presuming that you do not have that expertise. Sorry it looks like you require the services of a qualified technician. Should it be less than a year old it should still be under warranty.

Thank you for your question. I know it can be frustrating when the refrigerator stops cooling. The information you have received is very good. From the description listed, it appears the compressor is trying to start but is unable to. This will be a problem with the starting device on the compressor or the compressor is locked (stuck). I recommend replacing the starter # 241941003 and capacitor # 5304464438. These parts are available at SearsPartsDirect . If the compressor still won't start, then it will need to be replaced. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
