A:

The answer Joseph P sent has good information on the icemaker.

If the noise stops when the icemaker is turned off, the noise must be coming from the icemaker. When a gear strips inside the icemaker motor, it makes a grinding popping sound as the gear teeth slip.

Replacing the icemaker motor is almost as expensive as replacing the complete icemaker. If you want to repair the refrigerator, you should replace the icemaker.

The part number for a replacement icemaker is 5303918277, and the price is $117.99. There is a small chance something major could happen to the refrigerator right away and this money will be wasted. I would take a chance and replace the icemaker.
