Thank you for your question. I understand your concern about the temperature display. When checking the temperature, place the thermometer between some packages for a more accurate reading. Unfortunately, without a model number, I will only be able to provide some general information. If this model has a control down by the compressor and it got wet, the control will probably need to be replaced. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and please include the complete model and serial number and I will be glad to assist you further.

Lynnis, thank you for the model number. I suspect this will be a problem with the control # 297366300. These controls are very susceptible to storms, power outages and spikes. I hope this will help you.

Lynnis, it will be difficult to check this control. What will need to be determined is, what the actual temperature is, using the thermometer. If the temperature is ok but the display temperature is off, the control will probably need to be replaced. There is no check for this. It is possible the thermistor could be causing this problem but it's not very likely. Thermistors very rarely fail. However, if you would like to check the thermistor, it's located behind the freezer panel, next to the evaporator. A good check will be to remove the thermistor and place it in a glass of ice water. Be sure to disconnect the power before disconnecting the thermistor. At 32 degrees it should have a resistance reading of approx. 32,566 ohms plus or minus 5%. If it is in this range, it will further indicate the control has failed. If it is out of this range, the thermistor # 297018400 would need to be replaced. I hope this will help you.

Hi,

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife. I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance not working.

The temperature is controlled a device called a thermistor and it is connected to the door mounted control.  It measures the interior temperature and the control will turn on the compressor to cool the freezer down.  Either the thermistor is faulty or the control is not sending the signal to the compressor.  The other problem is the cooling system could have a leak and the coolant is escaping and the unit is not as efficient as it used to be.    A repair like this is difficult to solve and the best solutions is the have a Sears Home Service technician out to solve it for you.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Thank you for your question. I'm sorry you are having this problem with the refrigerator. The information you have received is very good. This can be a problem with the compressor or the starting device on the compressor. It can be difficult to determine, which of these components has failed. Now, if the starting device is burnt or if it rattles when shaken, it will indicate the starting device has failed. If both of these checks seem ok, a technician will have a kit and meter, that attaches to the compressor, that will determine if the compressor or starting device has failed. Without this kit and meter, a chance can be taken to replace the starting device # 216954218 and capacitor # 216985001. If the compressor still won’t run or if it runs but then quits again, it will need to be replaced. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services.
