I can see what a problem having the dishwasher continue to fill would cause. Due to the symptoms you describe, the water inlet valve on the dishwasher is faulty and not shutting off completely allowing water to slowly seep into the dishwasher.

The water inlet valve will need to be removed and replaced. Part # 154637401 can be ordered here; Sears Parts Direct .
