Question and Answers

Q:

Leaking from the freezer side of my side by side. ED5PHEXNL00 Whirlpool Side-by-side refrigerator

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your fridge and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number ED5PHEXNL00 and water will leak into the freezer when the drain system freezes up. Every time the unit goes into a defrost cycle, water will run down into the bottom of the freezer, instead of down the drain. You may also have a leak from the water valve.  To clear the drain, remove everything in the freezer, so the back panel can be removed. In this model only the lower panel should need to be removed. First disconnect power to the unit. With the panel removed, you will see the evaporator coil and directly under the coil is the drain trough (pan). The trough will probably be full of ice that will need to be removed. A hair dryer works well for this. Just be careful not to get it too hot. With the ice out of the trough, you will be able to see the drain hole, which will be plugged with ice. Use hot water to clear the drain hole. Keep working the hot water into the hole and wiping the excess water. This can take quite awhile, depending on how deep the ice is. This will need to be done until you get a good water flow down to the bottom drain pan.  If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.

Q:

Why won't the freezer freeze and the refrigerator cool?

A:

The compressor could be short cycling due to a dirty condenser or if the fan motor quits. If there is no cooling in the freezer, no frosting taking place and the compressor is running, it indicates a problem in the seal system or with the compressor. It can be a restriction or low charge or the compressor may not be pumping. These are checks a technician will need to make. I’m listing a site you can check to have a technician out. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . If you need more assistance, please resubmit your question, with additional details.
