Q:

freezing up

A:

I can understand your wanting to resolve this freezing issue you're having with your refrigerator. Hank, is your unit in the refrigerator or are you getting frost in the freezer. Frost in the freezer might indicate a bad door seal allowing moisture to get in microscopically, then freeze to ice. You might also have a situation with the defrost mechanism. Hank, could you please respond to this thread and let us know a little more information? I will forward your question to an expert who will investigate the matter further and get back to you. You will hear from them within two business days if not sooner. Until you hear from us, have a nice day.

Thanks for contacting manage my life about your refrigerator model ED19AK1LWR1; sorry you are having a problem, I will be glad to assist you. When you say the refrigerator is freezing up, do you mean everything is freezing in the fresh food section? Or do you do you mean that there is heavy frost build up in the freezer section or fresh food sections? If there is a frosting issue then it would normally indicate the defrost system has failed. The defrost system consists of a defrost timer located in the control box in the fresh food section, a defrost heater and defrost thermostat both located in the freezer section attached to the evaporator coil. The most common failure is the defrost timer. If you are having freezing temperatures in the fresh food section the most likely reason would be the cold control located in the control box in the fresh food section. The cold control should cycle the compressor on and off to regulate temperatures. If you could verify with added details which problem you are experiencing I will be happy to respond. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services. Ron H.

Hi Hank, Thanks for replying about your refrigerator issue. The frosting condition you have indicates that a component or components in the defrost system have failed. The most common component to fail is the defrost time. The timer is like a clock and allows you freezer to defrost every 10 hours, and if the timer stops the frost will build up and stop air flow and cooling. The timer is located in the top of the fresh food section in the control box next to the temperature control. There is a way to advance the time to test. Look for a slot in the control cover about the size of a dime, inside that slot or hole you will see a cam that can be turned with a flat blade screwdriver. Turn if clockwise until it clicks, the unit should stop running when you hear the click. Your refrigerator will now be in the defrost mode, you should be able to see defrosting of the freezer coil slow at first then more noticeable. If this happens then you know the defrost heater and defrost thermostat are good and the problem is the timer, replace with a new one and you're in business. If the unit does not defrost after advancing the timer manually then there may be a broken wire, bad heater or thermostat. And further testing will be needed. Here is a link to a new Timer Defrost Timer if you determine it is needed. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:Sears Home Services Sears Home Services. Ron H.
