It sounds like what you're describing is hard water & mineral deposits. If cleaning solutions do not work you will need to replace the heating element. I'm providing you with cleaning instructions & if that doesn't help I am including replacement instructions. I recommend a water softener to prevent future hard water problems.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.

Biker Dave, your answer was good. And I was telling my wife what you said and she said that what it was flaking off was a plastic coating that was around the coil. She said that when we got it, it had a white thing around the coil and now it was breaking off. Does that sound right and if so I guess I just need to replace the coil I guess. Thanks for your help.

Thank you bigjim, gave me 5 stars & I messed up on not sending you the replacement instructions. Wow, you’re too nice. Yes, the heating element is going to be pretty easy to replace. I have added the service manual with step by step access & replacement instructions for the heating element in the image below. REMEMBER to disconnect power before attempting access & get back with us for further assistance if needed.

I have not heard of what your talking about with white plastic coating on the element, especially on a new dishwasher. I suspect shipping material or possibly plastic Tupperware or another type of plastic dish melted on the element. You may still need to replace the element if the coating will not come off.
