Thank you for your question on the Dewalt Drill smoking.

It sounds like the brushes are not making clean contact with the commutator on the armature.

If when you using the drill on you see a lot of arcing coming out of the commutator area you may have a partially shorted commutator.

I would suggest opening the clam shell housing and replacing the drive motor.
