Question and Answers

Q:

Jen-Air Model D156B oven only broils, will not bake.

A:

You could have a wiring failure between the relay control board and that element. The relay control board in the side of the oven could be bad. There is a possibility that the electronic oven control board in the console is bad but that is less likely. You can view and order parts on this page: Jenn-Air Range D156B Parts . Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breakers to the range or unplug it to disconnect electrical power before accessing and replacing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .

Hello and thank you, Lyle. Rather than throw parts at it in "hopes", is there a way to test the relay control, ad/or oven control boards? Where are they located in the oven? Looking at the parts list I do not see those specifically named items. There is a "relay trans" that is around $195. Thanks again

The technical information on that range is on microfiche. It is hard to duplicate the documents in a manner that they can be read. I provided a quick test for the controls in the first image below. I tried to provide the wiring schematic in the 2nd and 3rd images. The 4th image shows the actual wiring diagram. These may not be very useful since they are so difficult to read. I recommend that you try that quick test on the control first. You may be able to use the wiring schematic or the wiring diagram to check the relays and/or the wiring. I may be able to focus in on a particular relay or portion of the diagram if you need information on a certain section. Reply with additional details and we will try to assist you further. NOTE: Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breaker for the range before accessing internal components.

Thanks, I will try that fast test. Although it is a bit scetchy as to what sequence to use, accoss and down, or down one side then down the next? Maybe it does not matter.

I tried following those rather strange (to me) instructions. I pushed and held the cook time button for a while and the stove started beeping and displaying a RED "FO" on the panel. I then pushed all the keys listed, except "probe", there is no "probe" key. Then I turned the knob... I get nothing, just a clock... I tried the keys in differnet sequences but same result.. Although the "cancel" key is listed in the middle of the sequence, when I pressed it the beeping stopped. I'm lost or just ignorant of what those fast test instructions are telling me to do. The first sentence says "On power up" I'm not sure what that means either. Maybe these instructions were translated from Chinese? Thanks

Hello Bill. The "On power up" instructions refer to completely disconnecting electrical power from the oven by shutting off the breakers for 5 minutes. This will reset the control board. When you power up the oven by resetting those breakers to apply electrical power, you normally have a minute or so to start that test. If you do not have the keys that are referenced on that technical test, then you will probably not be able to use it. Your oven may have a tech sheet in the console that you can use. You can shut off the breakers to disconnect power and check that area. That tech sheet is sometimes attached to the back panel. If you can find that sheet, it may provide you with some tests or wiring diagrams that you can read. On that older oven, that information that I provided from the microfiche is the extent of the technical data that we have on that model. In this situation, it may be difficult to test those control boards unless you can find a tech sheet inside the oven. You may need to have a service technician physically examine the oven and repair this failure. If you need more help, let us know and we will try to assist you further.

Okay Lyle, thanks. I will dig into the oven to see if I can find that sheet. Maybe turning the power off for the full 5 mins will help too. I just turned the breaker off and on for about 10 seconds. The panel on the front seems to work ok so I am more inclined to think there is something wrong with that relay board which I guess is in the side panel of the oven? Looking back at my records I find that that relay board # 04100260 was replaced in 2004 after a major (240 volt) power surge hit the house. It killed EVERYTHING except my 30+ yr. old stereo. At that time the display quit and we had nothing. We recently had a rapid power off-on-off failure due to a tree on power line, maybe that hurt the board.

I agree with you about that relay control board. That is your likely failure.

Do you know where I can download the correct use and care manual for this oven? We have had a booklet for years but I have discovered that it is for the wrond model; it is for a #SVE47500/600. It had to have come with the oven; the oven was in the home when we bought it. It is a '96 model, which is when the house was built..

What is the access to the relay board, is it via the inside of the oven, or from the outside? The unit is slid into a kitchen island with cabinets on each side and a fascia board across the lower front. It's almost like it was "dropped" in there. Must I slide the oven out to get to it?
