The defrost system on your refrigerator consists of the refrigerator control board, defrost thermostat, and defrost heater.

The best way to test the refrigerator control board is to try to force a defrost with the control board. I am sending you an image showing how to force a defrost cycle. If the control won't go into the defrost cycle, the control board is bad. You can test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat with an ohm meter.

The defrost heater will read 15-60 ohms. A bad defrost heater will usually read open. The defrost thermostat will read 0-2 ohms when it is 12 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Above 45-50 degrees the defrost thermostat will read open.

Bill, I apologize for not giving you enough information. The defrost cycle should last 20-30 minutes. You can stop the defrost cycle by opening and closing a refrigerator door. If there is a malfunction of the board and it doesn't respond properly, you can clear it by disconnecting power to the refrigerator for 5 seconds and reconnecting. The information you want is on the tech sheet for the refrigerator. You will find the tech sheet in the compressor compartment in an envelope. Remove the grill under the freezer drawer and look there first. If the tech sheet is not in the front area of the compressor compartment, it will be in the rear.
