I know how difficult it is to find information on older machines.  I was not able to locate a manual for this model.  I do see another expert located a engine manual .  This chipper/shredder was made by Troy-Bilt.  I was able to locate a manual that fits several models in the same age bracket.  The information may help with some of the use, care and repair for your model.  There are still some parts available if needed at Sears Parts Direct .  If further assistance is needed, please reply.  Thank  you for using Manage My Life.

Getting the right part can sometimes seem more difficult than it needs to be. The expert will review your post and respond. In the meantime, you might check a similar problem for this machine in the link below. I also added the online manual which is helpful for parts identification. I hope this helps.

Next time the engine dies, loosen the fuel cap for ten seconds. If the engine will start after priming, I recommend replacing the fuel cap. The fuel cap has a vent that should allow air to replace the used fuel. If the vent is plugged, fuel will eventually stop flowing from the tank.

If you do not think fuel is not the problem, you have to determine if the engine has spark. To check the engine for spark remove the spark plug wire and insert a screwdriver into the boot. Make sure to hold the handle of the screwdriver and position the exposed metal portion of the screwdriver close to something metal on the engine. A bolt head will work well. While you hold it in this position have a helper try to start the engine. You should see a spark from the screwdriver to the bolt head. This mean the coil is good. If you do not see a spark most likely the coil need to be replaced. If you see a spark the problem is most likely fuel related.

I hope this is helpful. If you need further assistance, please submit more details.

Q:

carberator nut for bowl 987799601 Craftsman Chipper / vac

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
Sorry to hear about the bowl nuts not working for the carburetor, that is definitely frustrating.
Have you recently replaced any of the carburetor parts or the carburetor itself? The bowl nut is still the original part, but I do see that the float bowl and the carburetor have been changed from the originals. The parts should be compatible, but I have seen instances in the past where a substitution part isn't 100% with the original parts. I see the bowl nut being part number 640015 for this unit. We will need a little more detail to properly identify where the issue is with the part.
Hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
