Thanks for contacting  ManageMyLife.  I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance.

Make sure to use fuel that is less than 5 weeks old. Gas will start to break down and become less volatile.  If the gas is old, drain the tank refill with fresh fuel. Next, check the air filter and replace it if is not dry or clean.

If the engine does not start, you need to determine what is causing the problem. The engine need three things to start and they are fuel compression and spark. Use the following instructions to determine what is missing.

The first check is going to be if the engine is getting spark. Remove the spark plug from the engine and connect it to the spark plug wire. Use a pair of insulated pliers to the base of the spark plug against a metal part of the engine. Now have someone pull the starter rope. When the engine is turning over you should see the spark plug spark. If the plug does not spark, disconnect the spark plug and insert a screwdriver into the boot of the spark plug wire. _Make sure to hold onto the handle of the screwdriver._ Hold the metal portion of the screwdriver close to a bare metal part of the engine. Now pull the starter rope again with the starter. If you see a spark, you need to replace the spark plug. If you do not see, a spark most likely the ignition coil is defective.

Once you have determined the engine has spark you have to check for fuel. The easiest way to check for a fuel problem is to remove the air filter and pour a teaspoon of fuel mix into the throat of the carburetor.  Then try to start the engine. If the engine acts as if it wants to start or runs for a short time and stalls the problem with the engine is a fuel issue. Most likely, the carburetor does have some build up from old gas that remained in the carburetor over the winter. You can watch THIS VIDEO to use as a reference for cleaning your carburetor. I'm not sure why the manual says not to use carb cleaner unless they're worried about plastics that may be on the carburetor. If your carburetor looks a bit different from the carburetor in the video let me know because the situation will be different.

If the engine did not attempt to start with pouring the gas in the carburetor, I recommend checking the compression of the engine. To check the compression, remove the spark plug and tuck the wire out of the way. Hold your finger over the spark plug hole and pull the starter rope. When the engine turns over the compression should force air past your finger. If the engine does not force air out part your finger there is an internal engine problem.

starting 96114000401 Weedeater Rotary mower

Thanks for the inquiry and for using

I am sorry to hear of the starting issue you are experiencing on the Weedeater mower, I know how frustrating that is.

It sounds like the issue is within the carburetor on the mower. If it starts initially but then dies after 30 seconds or so, there could be a blockage within the fuel jet not allowing for a consistent flow of fuel into the carburetor. The carburetor will need to be pulled and either cleaned, rebuilt, or replaced.

I tried pulling up the engine to help identify the carburetor, but my records don't seem to provide the engine type. I just show the base of the engine model as 10M902. You would also need to identify the four digit type afterwards like:  0015-E1, 0367-E1, 0452-E1, etc...I see six different engines based upon that engine model base, and to make sure you receive the right parts, the engine model will need to be verified and then inputted into the website to locate the right carburetor or build kit.

Let us know if you have any further questions and thanks for using

I have attached a link to a video that will help you with this repair. These carburetors are amazingly simple to deal with. You'll need to use the engine model number to look up and order a new diaphragm for the carburetor. Very likely, a local mower shop will have these on hand so you can get this taken care of without having to wait several days for a part to come in.

Thank you for using Manage My Life!
