Q:

What is the auger bearing replacement procedure for Craftsman 9hp two stage snow blower?

A:

Yes the entire auger assembly with gear box and the housing all the way back past the impeller will need to be removed. This is a very labor intensive do it yourself project, if you are not completely confident in your repair skills, I recommend calling a service company to diagnose and repair your appliance. I have included an illustrated parts diagram (exploded view) the parts needing to be removed I have marked in red. I also included a link to this models owner’s manual, the service and adjustments start on page 19. Please click the following; Owners’ manual This manual does not discuss the entire process of auger bearing replacement but some of the illustrations may help.

If you require further assistance please resubmit question with more details. I will be looking forward to helping you again in the near future.

A:

To Landell: Thanks much for the reply. The owner's manual does not address the procedure. Believe it or not, I did this winter before last w/o separating the housing fr the engine support! (it was really fun getting the retaining pin back in). That's why I thought I'd try the "e-z" way. Your red edits show the pulley and drive shaft bearing remaining behind - I believe that's not right, as the drive shaft does not easily separate from the pulley (pulley came out w/ housing assem.) My question is: Is it not necessary to remove the 3 nuts [499] from the drive shaft bearing retainer [490] in order to get the assembly out of the housing. Bolts [493] are not visible / reachable via the cut out on the impeller.
