Check to see if there is power making it to the motor when you try to start the compressor. If there is no power then the problem will be with the pressure switch. If there is power going to the motor then either the motor has failed or there is a bad capacitor on the motor.

I could not find my model number in the sears list of compressors so I just downloaded another that had a 2 HP motor. One thing the troubleshooter said was to avoid extension cords. I was using a 50 ft long extension cord. I moved the air compressor so it could be plugged directly int o the wall socket. It started and has run properly ever since. I noticed that the manuals are all about the same regardless of the model number. So the manual told me what oil to use and had a trouble shooting section that as illustrated above worked. thank sears for having such a helpful site.

Yes, an extension cord can cause problems. You can probably use this compressor on an extension cord, but it will need to be a heavy cord that's made for big loads. Glad you got it worked out!

I received 2 emails asking me to rate the expert. I assume a higher number is better than a lower number. I have had Wade before and he is always very good and nice to me. Even when I have dumb old man questions. Wade represents Sears very very well indeed. Thanks Wade.

Note: The problem is not a leak. the problem is that when I turn on the switch it does not start the motor. I do get a hum coming from he compressor area. I turn it off promptly.

Herb, I will be happy to assist you. I looked up the model number you submitted. It came up for me. If the motor only hums when you turn on the switch, I recommend unplugging the unit from the wall. Then remove the belt cover so you can access the pulleys. Once you have access to the pulleys try to turn the large pulley. This will ensure the unit is not seized. If the pulley does turn, remove the cover on the pressure switch. Then check the wire connections to ensure they are tight. If they are tight, reinstall the pressure switch cover and the belt cover. Then plug the unit into the wall outlet and check the operation. If it still only hums, I suspect the motor is the problem. If you have a digital voltmeter, I will be happy to assist you verifying it. Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark

Q:

My air compressor will not run when there is pressure in the tank

A:

It can be such an inconvenience when something so handy like an air compressor just doesn't seem to work. I have taken some time to research your question and noticed that someone else had asked a similar question with a posted response from an expert. I have attached the link below. Hope this helps!

Normally this type of issue is caused when there is a problem with the pressure switch. There is also a relief valve on the side of the pressure switch that can cause this same issue to occur. Watch the relief valve when you start the compressor with a near empty tank and then watch it again when you try to start the compressor with a full tank and see if its movements are the same. If they aren't, I would certainly replace it. If you cannot see any difference in the movement of the relief valve then I would replace it and the pressure switch.

  • Pressure switch: Z-CAC-4220-2 (switch and relief valve)
  • Relief valve: KK-4315

You can order those parts or any others you may need HERE .
