Q:

Think I might need a new starting capacitor? 919.168700

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the compressor. I know how frustrating that is.

There are a few things that can cause a compressor to trip a breaker. A defective capacitor, pressure switch, or motor can cause the compressor to trip upon starting, and a defective check valve can cause the breaker to trip upon recycling after building pressure.

It very well may need a new capacitor. I am not sure if you caught the area the smoke emanated from, but that will likely be the source. We would never recommend using such a long extension cord for the compressor, as with the voltage drop, issues like this can happen easily.

You can take the motor and capacitor to an electrical supply shop to be tested. They will usually make tests free of cost. The capacitors listed in the parts list are motor (brand) specific. The various motor brands would be listed as follows on the NI capacitor list:

A.O. Smith D21477

GE D23936

WEG D29142

GE D300107

Q:

Pops breaker. 919168700 Craftsman Air compressor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the compressor tripping the breaker. I know how frustrating that is.

If the breaker is tripping on a refill cycle, the issue will most likely be a defective check valve. The part number is A19712.

If the breaker is tripping on the initial fill, it will most likely an issue with the motor windings, and the motor will need to be refurbished or replaced. The motor itself is no longer available, part number Z-D26712. You can try running an online search for the part number, or take it to a local electrical supply house to have it repaired, or try to match it up.
