Thank you for your question.

I can understand you wondering why the air compressor will fill from empty but when it has to come back on it will trip the circuit breaker.

It sounds like the unloader valve is not work to relieve the head pressure off the outlet tube when the compressor shuts off.

When the compressor shuts off do you hear a whoosh of air for about 2 to 3 seconds?

If you do not then release the nut from the small aluminum tube that goes to the pressure switch to see if air will come out for a few seconds. If it does then the pressure switch unloader is not working.

Look on the side of the pressure switch air line fitting to see if it has a arm coming out of the pressure switch and pushing on a snifter pin on the small tubing fitting.

When the pressure switch cuts off it is suppose to move that arm up and open the relieve valve to unload the pressure in the head so the compressor will start without head pressure on it.

If that lever on the side pressure switch is not working when the compressor shuts off you will have to replace the pressure switch.

Let me know what you find and I will be glad to help you further.
