Thank you for your question.  I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. A few things can cause this to happen. If you had hit something that stalled the engine, it could have sheared the flywheel key. When this happens, it is hard to start the engine and it will yank the starter rope out of your hand. To cure this, the flywheel key has to be replaced. If you did not hit anything and stall the engine the problem could be the valves are out of adjustment. If the valves are out of adjustment, the compression release does not work and it will be hard to pull the rope. I found a video that shows how to set the valves.
