Q:

How can I replace a leaking gas tank? 917389010 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

Yes, you can replace just the fuel tank. In order to find engine related parts such as the fuel tank, you need to input the engine model number versus the mower model number.

Based upon Briggs engine 122T02-0377-EA, I see the fuel tank as 699374. I have linked it below for convenience.

Q:

917.389010 (not starting) 917389010 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about you Craftsman Lawn Mower model 917389010. I am so sorry it is not starting. I know how frustrating it is when you are all set to get the yard work done and the mower wont start. I will be happy to help you with this.

Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like the carburetor needs to be replaced. The fact that the mower started briefly after you sprayed the carburetor with ether indicates parts of the carburetor are still clogged with old fuel. There are tiny openings in the carburetor and no amount of cleaning will clear them. I have included the blue link below for you to order the carburetor.

When you purchase fuel for the mower, I recommend treating it with Fuel Stabilizer. It will keep the fuel from breaking down for two years. I have included that blue link for you also.

If you continue having issues starting the mower, I recommend you also check the armature/magneto and the engine zone control cable.  A bad magneto will not give the spark plug a spark. The engine zone control cable must be engaged for the engine to run. If this is not securely attached, or the cable is damaged, then you will have issues with keeping the mower running.   I have included those blue links also.

I hope this answers your question. If you need further assistance, please resubmit your question with additional details. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

I just saw the Engine Zone Control Cable on the schematic. That part is good on the mower. I did check that out. It just seams like there should be a cable running from the end of the Engine Zone Control Cable to the end of the choke controlling the opening of the carburetor.
