Q:

hard time starting 917388851 Craftsman Mower

Q:

engine won't stay running 917388851 Craftsman Mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the mower not running. I know how frustrating that is.

Since you have spark and the mower will run briefly with fuel in the cylinder, it definitely sounds like a clogged fuel jet within the carb. You will want to remove the carburetor and perform a thorough cleaning of all the passageways and main jet. That should solve the problem. You could also opt to rebuild or replace the carburetor if it's giving you issues on cleanings. I have cleaned carburetors before that still didn't perform 100% afterwards. Sometimes it will take more than one go through if you're not thorough enough. You will need to enter the engine model number to see the engine parts breakdown.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

how to replace a lawn mower start pull string craftsman model # 917.388851

A:

Looking at the parts illustrations for your engine, a model 123k02-0258-e1, on the Sears PartsDirect site or in your Owner's Manual should help you see how the parts fit together and what is involved.

The process is straightforward but does require some disassembly. In addition, the recoil is under spring pressure and that spring is a metal strip that can cut easily so if you have any reservations you may want to consider replacing the recoil as a complete assembly or consulting a professional.

You can get more information on professional repairs in your area by calling 1-800-4MY-HOME (800-469-4663).

If you do want to go ahead with the repair, the links below provide more information about the basic procedure and other general considerations.

You can get individual parts or a complete recoil through the PartsDirect site or use the part numbers there to get the parts through your Sears Store. The complete recoil would be all the items shown in the box labeled 608 in the image below from the PartsDirect site.
