I have a Sears 917-388721 that won't start. Cleaned the gas tank, replaced the gas line. No gas to the engine. Plug is dry. What to do 917388721 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is trouble with the lawnmower not starting.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Briggs and Stratton engine model number 12H802-2639-B1.

When an engine wont turn over there are 2 items to look at because that is what gives it the spark.   That is the spark plug and the magneto which is the piece that has the wire on it that hooks to the spark plug.  If you haven't changed the spark plug lately then even though it looks good, I would replace it.   When ordering from us the spark plug comes per the model and pre-gapped.

Magneto per engine model number 12H802-2639-B1

Spark plug per engine model number 12H802-2639-B1

If you have further questions please let me know.

Thanks for choosing Sears

Hello Delbert,

I'm sorry to hear that your mower will not start. I am assuming that it will crank when you attempt to start it and that it will just not fire and run. In my experience, the single most common cause for this issue is water or debris in the fuel system

Here is a video showing how to clean the carburetor and rebuild the carburetor. It is likely that you will not need to rebuild carburetor and flushing the fuel out of the tank and the float bowl will be sufficient. When performing this task, be sure to have a container to catch the fuel that will run out of the fuel line that attaches to the carburetor and then be sure to rinse it out after draining it.

I also recommend that gasoline be discarded after five weeks of storage. Oxidation and water condensation is likely to happen to the gas if it is kept any longer.

Let me know if you would like any further assistance.

I am sending you some images showing the replacement of the starter rope on your mower. Our system is not letting us attach images to answers just now. I am sending your images by regular email.

You can buy a copy of the complete service manual for your engine at []. The part number of the manual is 270962, and the price is around $27.00.
