When you pull the operator presence bar on a walk behind mower you pull the flywheel brake and cause it to release. You also open the switch that kills the spark to the ignition module if you don't open it. Something must have broken on the end that goes into the engine.

You might need to remove the blower housing from the engine to access the end of the cable. I suspect the end of the cable broke off.

Fred, I checked the cable and its working fine. What else could cause the engine to not start? I'm getting fuel but no spark. I've changed the plug and the air filter and put in fresh gas, what else can it be?

I have a model# 917.388611 mower with a 6.75 lawn mover engine model # 143.016702, that was running great and then when I went to empty the bag and tried to restart it, it won't start. I've changed the plug, the air filter, put in new gas, wire brushed off the contacts on the module and the flywheel and checked the cable as recommended by Fred and still nothing. What do you think the problem is?

Most likely the ignition coil has failed. There is generally no rhyme or reason to the coil when it fails. I have seen them fail with less than one hour on them and I have seen others last 20 years. To properly test it you will need to take the engine shroud off the engine and pull the little black "kill" wire off of the ignition coil and then test for spark. If you have no spark then, the coil is dead. If you do, there is a fault in the kill circuit of the tractor. The ignition assembly is part number 440-505.
