Check the spark plug first. If there is any doubt about it, replace it. If the spark plug is fine or has been changed then there is likely something going on with the carburetor. This could be plugged up air filter or trash in the carburetor bowl. I have attached a link to a video showing how to clean the carburetor. If everything looks fine on the outside then you may want to go over the inside and see if that changes the way the machine runs.

Q:

What can I do about a smoking lawn mower?

A:

You must have put too much oil in the engine. Check the oil level on level ground. It is very easy to overfill the engine. The oil level is hard to see with new oil.

When you overfill the engine it causes oil to go into the valves and get burned. This is where the white smoke comes from. After you get the oil level correct, remove the spark plug and remove any residual oil from around the tip of the plug.

There will be no damage done to the engine from the overfilling. If it is not corrected, some damage might occur after several hours of running with the oil overfilled.
