clinking noise 917387370 Craftsman Rotary mower

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your mower and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number 917387370 and from your descrption it sounds like a problem that has to do with the valves, the push rod for the valves, or the cam for the push rod. Being that it make the sound when it makes a revolution I believe it  has to do with an issue with an internal part. You may need to remove the cyclinder head. I recommend check the oil level as well. I hope this information helps you with your troubleshooting.  If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.

Thank you for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com.

Q:

Won't start 917387370

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
Sorry to hear of the engine issue your having with the Craftsman mower, I know how frustrating that is to have occur.
This is a telltale symptom of a partially clogged fuel jet or a sticking needle within the carburetor, which is starving the engine for fuel. I would recommend pulling the carburetor and with a fuel can of carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a bread tie wire to poke through the main fuel jet; do a very thorough cleaning of the carburetor being certain not to leave any remaining varnish inside of the carb. If you have an air compressor, it's also helpful to shoot compressed air into the jet and passageways after wire brushing them, and then douse liberally with more carb cleaner.
You can also rebuild the carb if the needle tip looks worn, the part number for the rebuild kit is 498260. If the carburetor is extremely varnished, it may be worth considering a replacement carburetor, the part number is 799868. For convenience, I have included blue links below for both options. Just click the link to be directed to the SearsParts site to view and purchase either option.

My pleasure in helping you with the carb. I've tried many brands of carb cleaner, and to me, they all work pretty much the same; I wouldn't see a major difference between the brands. I typically buy mine at a general auto parts stores. I buy the Carb & Choke cleaner, but any will do a good job for you. Just make sure you do a very good cleaning before the rebuild. I have rebuilt many carbs, and if you leave any varnish, it will re-clog and you'll have to dismantle it again and reclean it. Hope that helps and wish you all the best with the rebuild.

Q:

Why won't my mower stay running?

A:

I would say there is something wrong with the carburetor. That's about the only thing that can cause that sort of issue, unless it has an air leak. That would be highly unusual, but it is possible.
