Q:

Idle 917387360 Craftsman Rotary mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you’re having with the mower. I know how frustrating that is to have happen.

This sounds like a fuel issue. I suspect that the main jet is clogged within the carburetor and starving the engine. I would pull the carb from the engine. With a full can of carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a bread tie wire to poke through and clean the main jet; I would recommend a very thorough cleaning. Start by taking off the float bowl. Douse it very liberally with carb cleaner, and undo the pin for the float, and remove the needle and float. Clean them very thoroughly with the wire brush and carb cleaner. Pay close attention to the seat the needle sits in and clean it well. Once clean, start brushing the carb bowl and body and make sure you get all the varnish out. It may take three or four brushings with carb cleaner dousing in-between. From there, take the straw of the carb cleaner and shoot carb cleaner through any little hole or passageway of the carb. Shoot out the throat of the carb and poke the main jet with the bread tie wire. You have to make sure you get everything the first time, if you leave anything behind, it’s likely to reclog once you have it reassembled.

You can also rebuild or replace the carburetor depending on how varnished it is. The replacement carburetor is part number 640339, and the rebuild kit is 49-019. They can be ordered from Sears Parts.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

Mower Won't Stay Running 917387360 Craftsman Rotary mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
Sorry to hear of the engine issue you are having with the Craftsman mower, I know how frustrating that is to have occur.
This is a telltale sign of a blocked fuel jet or a sticking needle within the carburetor. The carb is starving the engine for fuel, which is why it starts with the primer, but dies when the fuel burns off.
I would recommend pulling the carb and either clean it, rebuild it, or replace it depending on how varnished and gunky it is. If you decide to clean it or rebuild it, have a full can of carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a bread tie wire or small gauge bail wire to poke through the main jet. Use the wire brush to clean any visible varnish and then douse liberally with carb cleaner. If you have an air compressor, shoot compressed air into the main jet, and any passageways you can see, and then douse again with carb cleaner. You have to make sure you are very thorough, because if any varnish is left over after the cleaning, there is a good chance it will work loose and regunk the jet. Also pay close attention to the seat area the needle sits in to fix any sticking issues. If the tip of the needle looks worn, I would recommend a rebuild.
If by chance you need the rebuild kit or a replacement carb (easier fix), I have provided blue links below that you may click on to be directed to the SearsParts site to view and purchase either option.
