I think the gas cap on the engine is not venting. The gas cap should let air into the fuel tank to fill the space that occurs as the fuel is burned. If air is not let into the tank in sufficient volume to keep the tank filled with fuel and air, the fuel tank goes into a vacuum inside. When this vacuum occurs fuel stops flowing out of the fuel tank and the engine dies.

The engine will not start until the fuel cap has vented enough air into the tank to break the vacuum.

You can test the fuel cap the next time the engine dies, by removing the gas cap and putting it back on. If the engine starts back up, the fuel cap is bad.

I wanted to thank you for the advice. it seems, much to my skepticism, that it was the gas cap. so glad i asked and even more glad you answered! sorry it took so long to let you know, but I haven't needed to mow the lawn all that much this summer, and wanted to at least try it several times. Thanks again!

Q:

Why won’t my lawn mower start?

A:

Be sure you are using gas that is no more than 4 weeks old. Old gas will cause this. If the gas is fresh, spray some starter fluid into the carburetor intake, if it doesn't start you know the problem is in the spark plug or the ignition module. If the mower starts on the starter fluid and runs a few seconds, the carburetor is not sending fuel to the engine. Then you will need to replace the carburetor. The carburetor costs $82.86, and may be purchased at the following link; Sears Parts Direct . If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services
