Check to make sure the oil is not overfilled. If the oil level is fine then you will need to replace the crankcase breather, which is what that tube connects to. You can use the model number from the engine at the link I've attached below to get a new crankcase breather assembly as needed.

Q:

I have a Craftsman mower #917387280. After changing the oil, the pull start rope will only pull out halfway and then violently snaps back.

A:

Starter ropes can be hard to pull but having it jerk back is not something that is normal. I did some research while you wait for the expert and located a similar question that may help identify the problem. I attached the link below. If you decide you would be more comfortable having a qualified technician make repairs, I attached the link to Sears Home Services. I hope this information proves useful.

Remove the spark plug (pull the lead away from the hole) and slowly pull the cord to see if it will pull all the way out. If it does, give it a few pulls and notice if anything is blowing out of the spark plug hole. If there is something coming out of the spark plug hole see if you can get some of it on a paper towel and check to see if it's gas or oil. Then stand the mower forward so the spark plug hole is facing down to drain anything in there out.

If there is nothing coming from the spark plug then I have a feeling there may be a valve sticking on the engine. You'll need to pull the head and tend to that if that's the case.

If something does come out of the spark plug: If it's oil, check to make sure you didn't accidentally overfill the oil. If it's gas coming from the spark plug, check the oil to make sure it doesn't smell like gas. This could be a faulty needle valve in the carburetor of just the engine being flooded from when you changed the oil (machine tipped on side).

Let me know what you find. I'll direct you how to address the problem once we figure out what's causing it.

Q:

CRAFTSMAN MOWER MODEL 917.387280 LEAKS OIL, WONT START, JUST QUIT RUNNING & LOW COMPRESSION.

A:

It sounds like either the connecting rod broke or the rings are worn completely out. I would suggest having a technician take a look at the machine to properly assess what's going on with it.
