Q:

How to fix gas smell? 917386140 Craftsman Rotary lawn mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
Mowers can linger with the gas smell for a short time after usage, but hardly ever more than an hour or so. With your mower smelling up the garage with gas, it indicates there is a leak somewhere in the system or has a seal issue on the gas cap.
Evaporating gas could be caused by the gas cap that is defective and not sealing properly. Also, if the mower starts and runs okay with no black smoke from the exhaust, it indicates a leak before the carburetor (tank, fuel line). If it gets flooded and hard to start and blows smoke when it does start, it's internal in the carburetor, probably the float. I'm guessing yours is leaking prior to the carb. Could just be a hardened, cracked fuel line.
You will need to take off the top housing of the engine and do a close visual inspection of the fuel line, tank, and carburetor to see if you have any leaks. A cracked fuel line would be the most likely suspect, but you will need to do a visual check.
I would not store this mower in the garage until its fixed, it would be hazardous to store in that condition.
Hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

Craftsman Lawn Mower Engine Carburetor Rebuild

A:

I admire people who take on projects like this one. The ManageMyLife website is a great place to find answers to questions that need qualified and insightful responses. Some of these questions that are asked will need specific research and will be answered by an expert with-in two business days but usually sooner. I found this experts answer to a similar question that may help you. Sears may have a rebuild kit for your model that may make this a lot easier. They may also sell the sealer you require. I hope this information is helpful.

I couldn't recommend a specific brand for this. Just grab whatever is cheapest. For what it's worth, I have used JB_Weld and epoxy for the welch plugs before and had good success with them. It's not often that I have to change them out anymore but I keep epoxy on the work bench now and when I have to do a new plug I just use the epoxy.

Thank you for using Manage My Life!
