Question and Answers

How do I replace the discharge guard on my 917.385191 mower?

The mounting bracket is normally removable in order to install the spring and pin, but by looking at the parts image of your model, the discharge bracket appears to be welded on the housing. If the mounting bracket is welded it will make installing the spring very difficult. You will likely need a small rigid piece of a hollow pipe to place over the end of the spring to assist in pre-loading the spring while inserting the pin. It appears that it's going to be very difficult if the bracket is welded to the housing. The images below are from the models with a removable bracket. If the mounted bracket was removable it would make it easy. I do not know the reason why some brackets are removable and why some or welded.

I recommend taking the mower and the discharge guard to the nearest Sears service center and have them install the discharge guard.
