Hi,

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife. I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance not working.

The gearcase is the same, but of a newer style.  The new gearcase has the same hook ups as the old one and will bolt right in.  I would recommend that you take pictures of the removal of the old gearcase and use the pictures as a reference.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Q:

walk behind mower is tough to start when cold 917.378900

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
You're right, with the plug wire emitting spark, it is losing it's starting capability by loss of spark. The plug wire is not sold singly, so a new armature magneto, part number  802574 will be needed to properly correct the issue. The coil on the engine has to have an air gap of .010" to .012" between the coil and the magnet on the flywheel.

There are a couple of alternative means you can try before replacing the armature magneto if you would like to try them first for any improvement. I have seen instances where electrical tape or heat shrink tubing is used on plug wires that are losing spark. You will want to be pretty liberal with the electrical tape. These may not be sure-fire fixes, but they may get you by for a while.
If you do need to replace the armature, or you prefer to go that route, I have provided a blue link below that you may click on to be directed to the SearsParts site to view and purchase the required armature magneto/coil for this Briggs engine.
