Question and Answers

I have a craftsman front drive rotaty lawn mower model # 917.378860. It keeps tearing up the sprokets on the wheel hub.

I have provided a page with multiple links you can review. I'm not sure why those sprockets are getting ground up. I will forward your question to an expert who will investigate the matter further. I hope the link below is helpful and have a nice morning.

Thank you for your question on the pinion gears wearing out the wheel hub sprockets.

First I would recommend checking the front axle for play between the transmission axle shaft and the axle bearing next to the height adjuster.

If you can detect some front to back play in the axle I would suggest replacing the axle support bearing as they are worn and allowing the pinion gear to back away from the wheel hub sprocket and cause premature wear and stripping of the wheel hub teeth.

Please let me know what you discover and we can continue to troubleshooting with that information.

Thank you. Sam A.
