Q:

bail handle cable. 917378760 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be happy to help with your lawn mower. Upon researching model 917378760; the cable should have a spring at the end of it. The spring would hook onto the throttle lever.

Q:

Front Wheel will not stay in place on mower 917378760 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

The drive engages by tightening the belt against the gearbox pulley. So if something stopped the belt from releasing tension, then the drive would not stop fully and both wheels would not want to roll back.

Belt tension might not release due to a problem with the drive cable or idler arm assembly or a problem with the belt itself. First clean the underside of the deck and remove the blade and plastic belt cover and clean any debris from under the deck and around the drive pulleys belt path.

If that does not solve the problem then you will need to remove the wheels and clean all parts especially the pawl drive pins with carburetor cleaner and lubricate with dry graphite and reassemble.

If there is excessive play in the height adjustment and pinion gear, you may need to replace the height adjustment bearing as well.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

craftsman mower transmission # 917378760 917378760

A:

Thank you for the inquiry and for using ManageMyLife.com. I am sorry to hear of the issue you are experiencing with the broken front wheel, I know how frustrating that is, especially since the grass doesn't wait to grow while you are down and out.

You mention the front left wheel broke off, is that the left when you are in operator's position behind the mower, or standing in front of it? In either case, the front wheels sit on the axle arm shaft coming from the wheel adjuster. The transmission shafts connect to the pinion gear that rides on the inside of the wheel. So if it was just a matter of the wheel breaking off the shaft, or the shaft breaking, a wheel adjuster would be called for. However, if the transmission shaft that connects to the pinion gear also broke, then you can just replace the output shaft, part number 183512, rather than replacing the entire transmission.

As far as the part number for the wheel adjuster, I will presume you are referring to the front left while in operator's position, in which case the part number is 438444.

For convenience purposes, I have included blue links below as well as a schematic you may refer to and see the parts breakdown. Hopefully this helps.
