Q:

Why won't my mower stay running?

A:

Something you said that raised red flags for me was that you replaced the carburetor. Why? It's possible that some debris/water/trash was in the fuel line and when you connected the new carb that stuff washed right down into it. I would say to pull the bowl on the carb and check it to make sure. Otherwise, it sounds like a fueling issue of one form or another. Other than that, I would recommend checking to make sure you have consistent spark from the spark plug.

I have additonal info/question on the question that I submitted concerning the Craftsman mower with the 7 hp B&S engine. The gas line was thoroughly checked out before the new carb was installed and there was a full line of gas coming out where it went into the carb. This mower is always stored within a building. How do I check the magneto/spark plug by myself as it is difficult to do when pulling the starter cord? Would a voltage meter work in lieu of a visual observation?

Q:

Should the helical gear teeth be straight or concave?

A:

The helical gear part number 171755 should not be concave. You did not indicate if axle or pinion gears (key#49) are turning or not. If the axle is not turning the failure could be helical gear (key#11) or worm shaft (key#13). You also did not indicate if the drive pulley is spinning the worm shaft (key#13) of not. I recommend checking the drive belt, pinion gears and drive wheels for worn teeth or debris.

The helical gear will need to be replaced if you do not find any other issues. You can order the helical gear at Sears Parts Direct. I added a link to Sears Parts Direct with the helical looked up for you. Click on "Helical gear" to open the link.
