Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com and being a valued member. It is unfortunate to hear that you are having issues with your mower and I do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. I'm looking at your model number 917378481 and I will list the items that I recommend that you revise. I recommend checking item 58, 51, 53 on both sides. I recommend replacing these items if you are unsure which is failing. If you are confident that item 49 gears are not damaged and the wheels teeth are not damaged you will need to replace the gearcase. If you are unable to resolve this issue I strongly recommend having a service technician make the repair. If you are unsure if the gearcase if damaged, open the gearcase and look for any broken or damaged gears. I can not advise what exactly is damaged, however I am able to advise on what parts to check. The gearcase bolts to the deck. I hope this information helps you. Click here for service technician.

Q:

why is my 6.75 hp front wheel mower not propelling? 917378481 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower 917378481 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
In order to gain access to the wheel adjuster bearing, the wheel, pinion gear asssembly, and the dust cover will all need to be taken off. The wheel adjuster will be held to the deck by two nuts on the inside of the deck. Lift the deck and support it, and remove the two nuts to remove the adjuster. Once the adjuster is off, you can tap the bearing out from the inside if possible, or get a long straight edge screw driver to pry the old one out. They are usually pretty easy to remove. Once removed, place the new bearing onto the adjuster and lightly tap it into place.
Hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Josh, you have excellent instructions but you just can't really remove the bearing from the retainer/knob holding it. I don't know how you can do it. I don't know why Sears is showing it in their diagram. It sucks because it can't be remove. The only way to fix it is it to buy the wheel adjuster kit (key #35) as it comes with the bearing. It's a ridiculous diagram that's not correct.
