Q:

REPLACE BLADE ADAPTER AND DRIVE BELT 917378440 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Thank you for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

The blade adaptor will need to be removed to properly change the drive belt on the mower.

To start, clamp the blade or put a wedge under the mower deck to prevent the blade from spinning. From there you can remove the blade bolt. With the blade removed, you can take the blade adaptor off the belt pulley. It is secured on the pulley shaft by a keyway and they can be a little stubborn to remove sometimes, a little lubricating oil and wiggling back and forth can usually do it. From there the belt cover can be removed.

Once you have the lower parts removed, you will see a cover over the belt and transmission on the top of the mower deck, it will need to be removed. That will give you the access to replace the drive belt. Once the new belt is installed, put everything back together and you will be ready to mow.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Q:

I own a Craftsman lawnmower Model #917.378440 and I am trying to install a new transmission part #532 180184. Should this be free floating or anchored?

A:

I can understand your concern over whether or not the transmission should be anchored or free floating. While you are waiting for your expert answer, I did some research on the unit. At this time, I was unable to locate information that would be helpful in regards to your question. Some of these questions that are asked will need specific research and will be answered by an expert with-in two business days but usually sooner.

Thank you for your question. I will be happy to assist you with your Craftsman lawnmower Model 917.378440.  The transmission is not really mounted in the housing. The c-clips on each end keep the transmission from moving from side to side in the housing. The spring and pin located under the bracket on the transmission keeps the belt tight. Other than these there is not anything else needed to keep the transmission mounted.  I hope this helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.    Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark T.
