Q:

mower makes intermitent loud metal sounds and goes off about five minutes after started 917378381 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
Sorry to hear of the banging sound you are having with the mower while running, I know how concerning that is to have occur.
Based upon the symptoms, especially with it seeming to go back to normal when releasing the control bail, I suspect there is something wrong with the blade/blade adaptor. The blade could be loose, bent, or damaged; or there could be something amiss with the blade adaptor that the blade connects to. The engine could be dying out because of the excessive load if the blade was not spinning correctly and freely.
I would start there, and next time you use it, try to identify the source of the noise. Hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

Change Gear Case Assembly (transmission) 180184 for 917.378381 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect. I can certainly assist you in locating the instructions to install a new gear case assembly on your mower. I did look into the model number you have provided and I have found information to assist you.

Remove the front wheels from the machine. Then remove the drive gears. Now tip the mower up and look on the inside for the 2 screws (each side) that hold the wheel adjusters onto the mower and remove the nuts. The wheel adjusters will pull straight off once the nuts are removed.

Remove the belt from the transmission. Then the plastic pin with the spring (goes up/down on the transmission to the mower deck. Now slide the transmission to the left and pull the right side down out of the mower deck. Then move the transmission back to the right and it's out.

The drive pulley should be removed by removing the flange nut on the top.

These are the only instructions we have access to.
