When a lawn mower kicks back and rips the cord out of you hands it is usually a sheared flywheel key. A sheared flywheel key is caused by hitting something. To replace the flywheel key the top of the engine has to be removed. Then the flywheel has to be removed. The new key is installed and the engine is reassembled. I have included an image below with the flywheel key boxed. I recommend having the mower repaired because the engine needs to be checked for bent crankshaft.

Here is a link to order any parts you need. Sears Parts Direct .

You can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services .

Q:

Looking for replacement cable for 917.167498. Sears sold me 917.170178 and was wrong. They can't seem to find right cable

A:

I am not understanding what you want for the mower. Part number 170178 runs from the idler pulley that makes the drive belt tight up the left handle and connects to the bail that you squeeze to make the rear wheels drive the mower.

Go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter the model of the mower. Select page 3 of the parts diagrams and see if you can locate the cable you want.

If you need help selecting the part you need, send another email and include details of what you have done. We will be glad to help.

I went to Sears with my cable 917.167498 and they looked it up and found the replacement number and I ordered the cable. The cable that was ordered was 917.170178 and was too long and the ends were different. The picture in the diagram of the mower is also different than my actual mower and I know I am typing in the model no. that is on my mower. Mine is a Craftsman 21' rear drive with key start and has the Eager1 6.75 Tehcumseh engine. It has multiple speeds on self propel. It has the body with rear bagger chute built into body. Has a total of three cables. One for disengaging the engine brake. one for the variable speed control and the one I need foe engaging the drive as you described in your answer.
