Q:

Oil in the air filter compartment. 917377842 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the mower leaking oil into the filter housing. I know how concerning that is.

If you tipped the mower with air filter side down, that is definitely a possibility. If you tip the mower, make sure the filter is always in the up position. I agree; remove the plug and remove any excess oil in the cylinder.

However, to be safe, check the oil level. There could be a possibility the needle/float is sticking in the carb which is flooding the cylinder and excess fuel is mixing with the oil in the crankcase. This would overfill the oil and cause it to come out of the air filter housing as well. Smell the oil and see if it smells of gas. If so, you have to clean the carburetor and change oil again. If not, then it could be from the tipping of the mower on its side.

I would not recommend using starter fluid to start the mower and/or burn off the excess oil. Simply pulling the rope with the plug removed should pull out any excess.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when you are working on your lawnmower this hot season.

Looking at this model 917.377842.   Seeing your front torque shaft assembly it is all one piece.   When you replace that though it would be most adviseable to also get the bushings on the front for both sides too.  I doesn't look that hard to replace and change.

I have included a link to our PartsDirect page where you can purchase the part you need to complete your repair. Just click the blue link below to be taken to the page.

I just received a replacement Front shaft assembly for Craftsman Gas Walk Behind Lawnmower model #917377842, PART NUMBER: 183692X004, Substitution: 192431X004. The shaft came with a washer installed on it that is not shown in the parts diagram. Where specifically is this washer supposed to go...? I thought maybe it was pined on the shaft by the cotter pin, but there is not enough clearance. Thanks
