Q:

mower wheels pull to right one time then to the left another time. 917377782 Craftsman Rotary mower

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your mower and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number 917377782 it is possible that  a pivot arm is bent or loose and could cause the problem.  Possibly the deck itself is my be bent or deformed. I recommend checking the gear pinion and the belt. Check the wheels and make sure they are not loose or wobbly. Make sure the wheels point in the same direction and are  all vertical at a standstill and when rolling. If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.

Thanks for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com.

I suspect the drive wheels of the lawnmower need cleaning. If debris builds up behind the rear wheels it makes them harder to turn. Try removing both rear wheels and cleaning the inside of the wheels and inside the dust cover. Most likely this will cure the problem.

You might need to do this cleaning 1-2 times each year.

Thanks Jimmy for your reply. I might try your suggestion later. I was able to fix the alignment issue after I noticed the front left wheel metal bracket was visibly bent from the usual 90 degrees. I removed the front axle and smacked the bracket a couple of times with a sledgehammer until it looked square. It goes straight now. Thanks again.

That makes sense about the connecting rod; if it's loose there could certainly be some slack in the height adjustment system. There may be some slack in several places or it could just be one place where there is a worn out bushing. You'll have to check over the wheel adjusters to see if you can isolate where the slack is coming from.
