transmission replace 917.377543

Thank you for choosing sears I would be happy to help you with your lawn mower. Upon researching model 917.377543; Begin by removing both front wheels. Remove the c-clip and remove both gears that drive the wheels. Remove the belt cover and remove the belt from the gearbox pulley.

Remove the 2 springs attached to the upper part of the gearbox. Remove the linkage from the drive lever.

Slide the gearbox to one side and lift the other side out of the mower. Be aware of the spring the gearbox sets in at the bottom. This spring needs to be in place when you set the new gearbox into it.

I trust this information will help you, have a great day.

I'm confused about the "spring on the bottom" as I don't see one. What part # is it? I can't find it on any diagram. Also, I'm concerned about the "replacement" part fitting back in without modification. My gear case is metal.

Mower shutting off after 10-15 minutes of use Craftsman Rotary mower

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears
I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is problems with the lawn mower to stay running.
Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Craftsman Lawn mower model number 917.377543.  With that model number, I am pulling up your original engine.   A Techumseh with a model number of 143.996510.

You are looking at and doing the right things.   It sounds like a carburetion issue.   However, you can't take the carburetor apart and clean it if the carburetor is already shot.   It will work for a few minutes but not very long because of all the little ports inside the carubretor.  The last few years with the "ethanol" gas, it has destroyed a lot of carburetors, fuel lines etc.

Sounds like and what I would do is get a new carburetor, new fuel lines,  and tune it up with a spark plug and an air filter.

Model 917.377543 Lawn Mower Oil Leak Model 917.377543

Thanks for the inquiry and for using
Sorry to hear of the oil puddling onto the mower deck, I know how frustrating that is to have occur.
I believe the most logical explanation of where the oil is coming from would be the breather tube. If the breather tube is not functioning correctly, it can allow oil to come through it and make a mess on the mower deck. If you replaced the breather tube if the oil is leaking from there, you will also need to take a look at the crankcase breather (where the tube connects on the engine).
The second possibility would be the seal on the lower portion of the dipstick. Sometimes that seal will give way and allow oil to seep from around the base of the dipstick. I wouldn't suspect this as much as it wouldn't necessarily puddle out like what your indicating, it would be much less.
These would be the two most logical suspects to check on. If you do a close examination after undoing the top cover, you may see traces of where the oil is emanating from, that would be the next best step.
If by chance you determine the breather tube is the culprit, you will want to input your engine model into SearsPartsDirect to see engine parts. This mower uses a Tecumseh engine with a model of 143.996510. The breather tube parts are key numbers 7 and 12 on the diagram. I have added a blue link below that you may click on to be directed to the SearsParts site to view the engine diagram.
