The baffle welds into place and acts as a buffer to keep debris off the transmission and axle. It also helps when mulching or bagging to get a good vacuum going.

I don't think the baffle being missing is related to the drive stopping. Remove one of the drive wheels and start the mower up. Engage the drive and watch the little gear that's behind the wheel to see if it turns or not. If it does not there is a problem with the transmission or belt. If it does turn the matching gears on the back side of the wheel are likely worn out.

It seems clippings are getting into the belt area and clogging it, causing the belt to stop working. It keeps happening on both my mowers.

I guess I need to have a new baffle welded on the craftsman. I'm not sure if the other mower even has a baffle to protect the belt area.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. If the baffle came loose from the housing you can try bolting it back in. Just hold the baffle in position and drill a hole. Then insert a bolt and secure it with a nut. I would think a 1/4 inch bolt would work fine. If the baffle is bent up too bad or if it is missing, the housing has to be replaced. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark

Yes the baffle is completely gone due to an 'altercation' with a hidden rock or stump in the way of the blade. It was bent so badly it ended up getting removed soon after. I'm new to mower lingo- what do you mean by the 'housing' needs to be replaced? Can I just order a new baffle? Thanks for your help!

Sally, If you do not have the baffle or can use it the housing needs to be replaced. I posted an image below that shows the housing. The cost of the housing is $99.49. If you would like to order the housing, you can do so from the following link. Replacement mower housing for Craftsman mower model 917377500. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Sally, I am glad to help. If you choose to purchase a new mower, I recommend raising the mower up a little more. That will reduce the chance of hitting the hidden obstacles. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Mark
