If I am remembering correct on this particular engine, you have to take the intake manifold (with the carb attached) off in order to remove the carb itself. If I'm not mistaken, the screws are Phillips head type and the nut is a standard thread nut.

There was another intake/carb combination out around the same time as this engine that you had to use a flexible head socket to remove the screw and use a small open-end wrench as back up on the nut. But just like the other, the intake had to be removed to do all this.

Mine is the second type. Bolts are hex head with hex nut. It looks impossible to get even a flexible head socket into the space between the engine block and the engine intake. Guess I have no choice but to haul it 50 miles to the closest repair shop. Thanks anyway, Malcolm
