Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the Craftsman mower. I do not think the problem is with the compression. The reason being it runs great for a while. I suspect fuel or spark. I recommend removing the air filter. Then start the engine and let it run until it dies. Once it dies, spray a shot of carburetor cleaner into the opening of the carburetor. Then try to start the engine. If the engine starts and dies the problem is fuel related. If this is the case, I recommend cleaning the carburetor. I found a great video that shows how to clean the carburetor. Click here to watch the video.

If the engine does not start with the carburetor cleaner I recommend checking the engine for spark. Click here to watch a video on how to check for spark.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Hello Pete,

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing mulching issues with your mower. Your mower came with a 421825 high lift type of blade. I would like to suggest that you try a mulching specific blade. I sincerely hope the results that you may experience with this type of blade will give satisfactory results.

I would also suggest that a careful check around the bag discharge cover area be made, ensuring that there is no debris holding it open slightly.

Please let me know if there is anything further that I may assist you with,

Jerry C

I installed the blade you suggested and it still is a terrible mulcher. Even the second time over the same row I get clumps of grass behind the mower. This really is a terrible lawn mower.

Hello Pete,

I'm sorry to hear that the blade has not yielded the results that you are looking for. I discussed your situation with several of my colleagues and we recommend that no more than two inches of length be cut off at a time and that a slower mowing speed may need to be used.

One thing to consider about this type of mower is that it is designed to mulch or process the clippings into tiny pieces. This takes a little longer than just cutting. I advised of the different blade type due to the fact of the extra cutting surfaces, in the hopes that it would remedy the problem described to me.

Again, I am sorry that you are not enjoying your mower and I hope that these suggestions will help.

Nothing I try helps. I've walked so slow that I couldn't use the self-propel lever. I overlap the uncut row just a few inches, and it still leaves clumps. I go back over the row I just cut to clean up the clumps, and the clumps leave clumps. I constantly am looking down so I can kick the clumps over to the next uncut row. I basically have to cut my lawn 2-3 times to clean it up.This lawn mower is truely junk. I'm really dissappointed in Craftsman, and I buy a lot of Craftsman stuff - snowblower, garage door opener, shop vacs, air compressor, tools, garage cabinets, blower, and trimmer. But this is the last Craftsman lawn mower I will ever buy. There must be something that can be done. Can you exchange it for me? Buy it back? Issue a recall? It's useless.

I'm sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your mower. The suggestions that I have provided usually remedy the problems that you have described. I suggest taking it in for service at your local sears store. Walk behind mowers are a carry-in item and I think that it may be a good idea to have a Sears Service Technician have a look at it.
