A miss in the engine could be a few different problems. If the engine runs good for the most part I would suspect dirt in the carburetor. I recommend cleaning or replacing the carburetor. When the passages in the carburetor become clogged, the engine will run rough and seem to miss.

Another cause of missing is the flywheel key sheared or partially sheared. The flywheel key is used to time the engine so the ignition coil sends a spark at the right time. The flywheel key is located between the flywheel and the crankshaft.

We now offer flat rate labor of $56.99 on mowers brought to our drop off locations, which means there is no hidden cost. The only other cost is for parts and tax.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services .

Q:

Why does my Craftsman mower seem to be starving for fuel?

A:

Based on your symptom the carburetor float could be stuck upwards preventing fuel from filling the carburetor float bowl or there is a blockage in the main nozzle tube (key#36) or the high speed float bowl nut (key#40) preventing fuel from being drawn into the carburetor. You will likely need to remove the carburetor bowl and possibly the carburetor in order to properlly clean it. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician.
