This sounds like an ambitious but worthy project. The expert will review and be with you within 24-48 hours if not sooner. I have however done some research on the manual to your model. While you are waiting for your reply from the expert I have attached the link below. Good luck on your project!

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. I have looked up the model number you have submitted. The manufacturer does not have a manual for rebuilding the gearbox. I have posted an image below that shows the parts of the gearbox. Once you have the screws out of the gearbox gently, pry the two halves apart. Be careful not to loose any of the parts. Then carefully remove all the parts and lay them on a clean work surface so you do not forget where they go. Once you have the parts out inspect them and order the needed parts. While you are waiting for the parts clean all the parts. After you have the new parts installed pump the bottom half of the gearbox with grease. Then reassemble the unit in the reverse order.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Lawrence, I assume you have the mower back together. If this is the case, remove the spark plug from the engine. Then have a helper hold the bail down and pull the starter rope. The pulley on the top of the gear case should turn. If it is turning, pull the engagement lever on the gear case. Once you have the lever pulled, have your helper pull the starter rope. You should observe the pulley on the top of the gear case and the axle shaft turning. If the pulley is turning but the axle is not the problem is in the gear case. If you want to repair the gear case, remove the top half case. Then use a pair of pliers to move the lever to the engaged position. While holding it in gear, turn the input shaft. You should be able to see what is going on. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Q:

How do I change the gear box on my mower model 917.377303, and the belt? Thank you

A:

To replace the belt you need to remove the drive cover from the top of the deck. Push down on the gearbox pulley and remove the belt from the pulley.

Turn the mower on the side with the carburetor down and remove the blade, blade adapter, and the debris shield that is covering the belt.

Remove the belt from the engine pulley and remove the belt.

To replace the gearbox, remove both front tires, e-clips, pinion gears, and dust covers.

On the gearbox remove the drive cable from the gearbox cover. Remove the spring on the rear of the gearbox and rotate the gearbox so you can remove the spring underneath.

Slide the gearbox to the left far enough that the right axle will drop out of the opening in the wheel adjuster assembly.

Slide the gearbox to the right far enough that the left axle will drop out of the opening in the wheel adjuster assembly.

You can now remove the gearbox and install the new one.
