There is no actual calibration procedure. To start with, I would recommend measuring the tip of the blade to the ground with the blade facing forward (so that the tip is at is lowest point) or, better yet, cut some grass and measure the actual grass height afterwards.

The cutting height gauge, as with all the height adjustments, is relative only. That means the 4.5 on the gauge is not likely to be an actual 4.5 of grass height when you cut at that setting. The numbers are reference points only and not intended as exact measurements. So you know, for example, that if your grass is too high at one setting you can go to a lower number setting on the gauge and the grass will be cut shorter and not longer.

There are simply too many variables involved to accurately reflect an exact grass height measurement on any gauge on the tractor. Aside from such basics as cutting speed, tire pressure, blade type and deck adjustment altering the cutting height, you also have to consider that lawns are not perfectly level to allow the tractor to maintain a constantly level setting. And even if it were possible to level the lawn completely, grass will still bend and lift and therefore get cut, at different heights depending on the type of grass and how moist it is at the time it is cut.

The 4 blade part numbers you sent all change to part number 406713. The holes in the blade are the same as the 141114 mulching blade. If the 141114 mulching blade is a 22 inch blade, the blades will interchange.

Q:

My Craftsman Lawnmower self-propelled drive has locked up. How can I release it?

A:

You need to find out what is happening that is causing the gear box to not drive the mower.

Remove the drive cover on the front part of the deck and see if the belt is off the gear box pulley, or broken. Get someone to engage the drive and disengage it and see if the gearbox moves to tighten the rope.

If you need help repairing the mower after you locate the problem, send another email. Give us the details of what you have done and we will try to get you the information you need.

I have model 917.377291 and the drive gear is not working. I replaced the belt w/o luck. Assumed would need to replace tranmission next. I removed the wheels but could not get bearings off. Are they heat pressed on? Do I have to get Sears to remove or can I do it?
