Question and Answers

My Sears push mower pull cord will not engage the clutch with the flywheel.

Something has broken in the rewind starter causing the pawls to not engage the flywheel cup. It is possible you could replace a part(s) in the starter assembly. You would need to remove the starter assembly from the engine to see what parts are needed.

To remove the starter assembly and reinstall it or a new starter assembly you need to remove the bolts from around the lower edge of the blower housing and lift the blower housing from the engine. This will let you inspect the starter to see what is broken.

To see a parts diagram of the starter go to []. Enter the model number in the search as 12H802-1534-21. This is the model of the engine on your mower.

If you need to remove the starter from the blower housing, you will have to drill out the 4 rivets holding the starter to the blower housing. You will have to use bolts and nuts or pop rivets to attach the starter back to the blower housing when you are through. If you install a new starter assembly the 4 bolts and nuts will be included in the package.

If you need a new starter, the part number is 497680 and the cost is around $40.00.

Where can I find a manual for my mower?

You can use 917.377282 for reference. The last digit in the model is different, but the machine is the same. If you need to order parts, just make sure you use the correct model number from your machine to ensure that you get the correct part. You can look up that model number at the main Manage My Home website.
