Remove the wheel and the drive gear on the side you're working on. Look behind up under the mower deck behind the wheel area and you should see to nuts that attach the adjuster to the mower deck. Remove the 2 nuts and then the adjuster will slide off of the axle and be free of the mower. Set the new adjuster in place and secure it with the 2 nuts. Put the drive gear and wheel back on and you should be ready to mow again.

I have to change my original comment. The black smoke is actually coming from the other side of where the air filter is. Looks like the exhaust. Any way, I look at the troubleshooting section and one of the cause of poor starting and no start, is a defective or old spark plug. Bought the same plug from ace hardware for $2.99, installed it and the lawnmowert again starts with one pull.

It sounds like the engine is flooding since you have the black smoke after it being so hard to start. If you prime the bulb to start it, only press the bulb 2-3 times and see if anything changes. Also, if you've not recently replaced the spark plug you may want to do that. A fouling plug could very well cause this to happen.

Something else to try is clean the mower around the air filter and then take the air filter out and see if it changes how hard it is for the engine to start.

Let me know what you find with these things and we can proceed from there as needed.

I did not see your 2nd post until after I'd written my response. I'm glad you got the mower running again and it was just the spark plug.
